I recently faced mysticpickle playing a Sloane huckster deck built around José + Shotgun. I found it very interesting, and here's my attempt to reverse-engineer it. I wonder how close it is to the original.

3s - x14, 5s - x13, 9s - x12

High risk, high reward. This deck can get control points very fast, but it also has very little influence at the start. Good news is, it's pretty good at acing opponent's dudes, so they're gonna experience a lack of influence as well.

José Morales equipped with a Shotgun and buffed by Charlie's Place has 6 bullets and, consequently, a huckster skill of 6. This means that Bobo has 7 stud bullets, and those Soul Blasts have a decent chance of acing opposing dudes even with all the low values in the deck.

Add in the penalty to value provided by Corporeal Twist and Stone Idel, and you can now Shotgun any dude with a value of J or less. That's pretty much any dude in the game, that you can ace in the beginning of combat, and get a bonus control point for doing so.

The Stakes Just Rose are there to turn José's high bullets into studs, and Hidin' in Shadows keeps him safe from Unprepared and other nasty stuff. These two actions might be worth maxing out.

Keep in mind that this is just an attempt to reverse-engineer an interesting deck that I faced recently. Starting posse, number of deeds, and distribution of actions, are all subjects to be adjusted during playtesting.

Correction: Jose Morales at 6 huckster means Bobo is 7 stud ;) But only if Jose is with him in the fight.

db0, so 'while in a shootout' refers not only to time but also to space? José actually needs to participate in the shootout to get the bonus?

I believe so. But if you want a definite answer you better ask the rules team.

It says in play, not at his location.

I just played with this deck today. made some minor adjustments. I was surprised at how well this deck worked.

Nice deck! :)

For the record, I also think, that José only gains the bonus while he is in a shootout. The keyword here is in. If a shootout happens somewhere, that part is not quite fulfilled. It is a spacial not a temporal reference.

Confirmed: José needs to participate in the shootout in order to get the bonus.

Fun. I've been trying to build something similar, but I built on 7s instead of 9s for Fetch and Pinto and Kidnappin.

Sloane 3+5+7 huckster deck starting Jonah Essex even won some tournament already.

I'm playing a 3+5+7 right now, with a couple of Changes, Jose is just too attractive not to play in this deck. I managed to Corporeal Twist Mario Crane twice and Coachwhip him since he was the only dude in his posse for 2 Control points.

This archetype is scarier than 4R Control. And this is a sweet twist on the deck.

Nothing is scarier than 4th Ring Control - we have Paralysis Mark, join us! ;) Really cool deck, as a lot other people I am also playing around with Sloane and hexes atm. I find that Fetch is highly useful for achieving Charlies/shotgun/whatever you need in a combo to make it work. A highly valueable card imo, do you lack it here?

See the 3+5+7 version mentioned above, it uses Fetch.

Yeah - but do you feel it is lacking in this deck? You only have 2 Charlies (which is the bullet bonus you need to get Bobo that high), 3 Stone Idols/Bobo - which I guess you will draw into at day 3 the latest and only 2 Soul Blasts. If the combo relies on Charlies and Bobos I would think that One Good Turn or Fetch is needed to make it happen? What is your experience playing it?

I had a feeling that Double Dealin' would be the most valuable to Sloane. It seems as if that saddlebag was conceived with this clever deck in mind. Great work, looking forward to facing this beast in my meta!

As you stated, 2 starting influence is pretty dangerous. A single blood curse or rumors could easily hamstring your game. How has it fared against more control-ish builds?

Cheers!

LordManHammer, I didn't really test this particular build much. The 3+5+7 version is probably more viable because it's basically a regular aggro deck with some tweaks, not a combo deck. This version starting José is much more vulnerable to Kidnappin' or any other forced shootout. When I tested it I had to camp at home for a few turns setting up, and that is not really something you want to be doing when playing Sloane.

gravity, I suggest starting Lawrence or Barton instead of Travis.

Actually, I'm not even sure mysticpickle played any 9's beside Stone Idol. It is probably a good idea to focus on 7s instead. The real question is whether you start José or Jonah. In one case you're vulnerable early on without a stud, and in the other you have a 30% chance to fail the pull on Fetch.

Jan 19, 2015 LordManHammer

Yep - which makes these decks fun. You cant have it all :D

Jan 19, 2015 Gazette_Alex

@LordManHammer- I disagree. 4R control needs time to set up. This gets in your face and wrecks you and gains control points for doing so. And it does it quickly.

Jan 19, 2015 Gazette_Alex

@mplain- Totally playtesting this tonight. Any changes you'd make from this list?

Jan 19, 2015 LordManHammer

@Gazette_Alex Yeah my comment was to the José Morales or Jonah Essex choice. That is either have a stud and unreliable pulls or to have more reliable pulls but at the cost of the stud. However, please let us know how it is working without Fetch.

Jan 19, 2015 Gazette_Alex

@LordManHammer- Ah, I see. Yeah will do. I'm playing Jonah 3/5/7s and while fetch is nice it's not always necessary and or useful. Though I've been able to grab hex slingin's and use em against my opponent.
