Right then. Sit down and strap in because this'll be a long one.

Going into the Epitaph season I knew I wanted to play EW. I haven't played an EW deck competitively so figured it was a bout time. (we don't talk about the Bear Cannon).

The deck fronts itself as an aggressive shooter. With a pair of decent studs backed up with some very strong shootout abilities. Notable here is that The Mixer can be used on your dudes OR your opponent's. He also wins in the fight vs Peacemaker since your opponent ignores any stud modifier, it's not there to begin with so Peacemaker doesn't do anything.

What the deck actually does is out chess you like a champ. Beyond the Veil, Mazatl (who is hilarious with a Good Stiff Drink) Fire of Nanahbozho, Spirit Trail and even a Railroad Station to help keep your guys moving.

It doesn't like getting in a fight but it can and will throw legal FH / 4OaK if it's backed into a corner.

Let's talk about some of the tricks.

1x Coachwhip!: I run 1x Whip in pretty much every single deck I play. If you can draw it early so they never see it, it WILL ace somebody. Especially if a glance in your bin only shows This'll Hurt in the Mornin' as your only cheatin res.

1x Moving Forward: The deck needs a deed to get rolling so this helps. Number one go to deed to fetch in lowball is Maza Gang Hideout - it costs you 0 and immediately gains you 1.

2 x No Funny Stuff: Headline! Stops Calling The Cavalry and it doesn't see a lot of play so can really throw your opponent off balance. Ideally you want them to discard the cards because then you can use your own shenanigans, but if they don't it means they're not hitting you with anything either.

Game Plan:

The idea is to build up to a Steven Seagal as quickly as possible. You only really need 3 totems to do this.

Wait... a 3 Totem Chief? Are you nuts?

Yes I am .

Here's how it works.

You put your totems on your OUT OF TOWN DEEDS!

Play the chief

Use Beyond the Veil to drag him to the deed.

Use his ability - YES! you can use him anywhere, he just needs to be IN Town Square to be worth CP.

Use Fire of Nanahbozho to stand him up

Use Good Stiff Drink (yes, yes, it#'s very very silly)

Use his ability again he's now worth 2CP per totem rinse and repeat for each Stiff Drink in hand

Spirit Trailhim to TS - sit there with all your guys and as many as... I believe current record for this stands at 18 CP! Your opponent has to go all in TS shootout or lose.

Alternatively close out play is a single Doris to abuse the move effects

Having seen this in action it is fun and capable of holding its own in tournament games. I'm pro anything that showcases non Spirit Fortress options for Eagle Wardens, thanks to you and others for highlighting various options over the last month or so.

Features the wicked combination of Mariel Lewis and Kidnappin' too, which is particularly effective if you can force your opponent to spread out, as this deck does.

Interesting deck! I think this is a great example of a "healthy" version of CP gain on dudes. Not only do you have to have multiple cards set up in advance, but it ends in the Town Square, so there is still a potential chance to contest them.

Just a quick note on No Funny Stuff - I was surprised to see it more than once at the world tournament at Gencon this year. I think it is starting to catch on a little more in the light of Calling The Cavalry.

Even without a Calling the Cavalry meta, I think it can be a solid choice, depending on the strategy of the deck.

Ok what is the Bear Cannon?

I can see two possibilities, each terrifying:

  • It involves using Mother Bear's Rage and potentially Kabeda Hakurei to harass people in Town Square and even in their home (if Kabeda is at their home)
  • Or "Bear Cannon" is like jazz: if you have to ask about Bear Cannon, you'll never understand Bear Cannon. ;)

It's option 1 :)

However Harlath is a bit off on how it works (you can't do it in an opponent's home, and she doesn;t have to be AT the location you tagret)

Basically works like this:

Mother Bear's Rage says "this location or adjacent" which is key to making it work. Totems that say "this" work off the location of the Shaman. normally that would be the same as the Totem itself however Kabeda Hakurei's trait let's you dodge that.

Mother Bear's Rage on your Outfit, Kabeda in Town Square let's her summon a bear at ANY in town deed (except Maza Gang Hideout) - It gets funnier if you put the rage on Surveyor's office as then she can launch them out of town too. Hence Bear-Cannon

I'm not a rules team guy (or even a strong authority on rules!) but I think it might work at the opposing home: attach a totem to a deed next to your opponent's home and then use that one to call them out at home. Sorry if I'm wrong!

Rules compendium (http://pineboxentertainment.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/doomtownrulescompendium_v0.7.pdf) states the below, so "this location" would be your opponent's home... "Whenever a Totem's ability refers to “this location,” it is referring to Kabeda's location."

The real question here is why I'm trying to enable this nonsense? ;)

The Bear is location or adjacent deed. Pretty sure it's done so to prevent call outs at opponents home.

Really interesting use of the Chieftain. Had not considered that if he could/can use the ability again, the cp would accumulate.

@Whizzwang, pretty sure you played EW blockade at the EU Marshall 2016? ;)

Happy for somebody to check with the rules team, but as Mother Bear's Rage can call out a dude "at this location" and Kabeda Hakurei's current location counts as "this location" I think you can use the totem to call out opposing dudes at home (once per turn), if Kabeda is in the opposing home.

Yeah, pretty sure you're right about the ruling on Kabeda. Had TS in mind.
